Det der karakteriserer IEEE-metode til kildehenvisning:
- kildeangivelsen i teksten er et nummer i en kantet parentes. Nummereringen er fortløbende efter, hvornår i teksten kilden nævnes.
- benytter en numerisk referenceliste, dvs. den følger, hvornår i teksten kilden nævnes.
Nedenfor ses eksempler på, hvordan de forskellige typer af kilder refereres i teksten, og hvordan kilden tager sig ud i den nummererede referenceliste.
