Allocation of a DOI

to a publication, a rapport, a data set, etc.

The research ecosystem is increasingly being connected through Persistent Identifiers (PIDs), which are unique IDs assigned to objects related to research. ORCID and Digital Object Identifier (DOI) are examples of such Persistent Identifiers.

Digital Object IdentifierDOI

The DOI is used to uniquely and permanently identify digital research outputs such as publications, reports, and datasets. The DOI is unique and makes it easier to find, identify, and cite online materials. A DOI consists of a proxy, a prefix, and a suffix, separated by a slash. Note that a DOI should always be displayed as a complete URL.
Example: https://doi.org/10.7939/r3qz22k64

A DOI is associated with metadata describing the object/resource and its digital location, i.e., a URL or internet address to a landing page where all details about the object are available.

Most publishers assign DOIs to scientific articles when they are published.

DOIs for publications in DTU Orbit

DTU Library is responsible for assigning DOIs to DTU publications. If you wish to have a DOI issued for a publication with DTU as the publisher, e.g., a report, PhD thesis, conference contribution, or similar, the resource must first be registered with a landing page in DTU Orbit.

Contact orbit@dtu.dk to have your research output registered and assigned a DOI. Please reach out well in advance.

Other research outputs and objects

All types of research data and software published in DTU Data are automatically assigned a DOI.

DTU EIS, DTU Equipment Information System, assigns DOIs to instruments and facilities registered in the system.
