Open Access publishing at DTU

DTU is committed to Denmark’s National Strategy for Open Access, and Open Access is part of DTU Publication Policy.

Open Access policies

Denmark's national strategy for Open Access is under revision but still in effect. The strategy stipulates that from 2025, 100% of scientific articles from Danish research institutions must be published as Open Access. In 2025, 78% of the scientific articles from Danish universities are Open Access.

The implementation is to take place through the green model. The strategy does not exclude the use of golden or hybrid models, however, as long as it does not increase the publication expenses.
How to achieve Open Access?

DTU Publication Policy

In line with the National Strategy, DTU Publication Policy recommends green Open Access. In addition, the policy recommends that researchers:

  • aim to publish in the most suitable and prestigious publication channels available
  • choose Open Access journals if these are considered to be on a par with traditional journals
  • as a minimum retain the right to archive their publications in DTU’s institutional repository, DTU Orbit

DTU Orbit and Open Access

DTU Orbit is DTU’s institutional repository. Many publishers allow researchers to upload preprints and post-prints in repositories with Open Access (typically after an embargo period).

In many cases, DTU researchers can fulfil the national green Open Access requirements by sending the post-print version of their article to DTU Orbit - DTU Library will handle the rest.
