Reference management

– keep track of references with Mendeley, build your own library for correct citations and reference lists

Reference management is a central part of academic work for both students and researchers. An introduction to reference management can therefore support the development of students’ study skills.

Why is reference management relevant?

Reference management supports two core functions in academic work:

  • Documentation:
Students must be able to account for which parts of their work are based on others’ research and which parts constitute their own contribution. This strengthens both the quality and transparency of academic work.

  • Retrievability:
Correct references make it possible for readers to locate the sources used, assess their relevance, and verify the argumentation.

An early understanding of these principles contributes to better assignments, more conscious use of literature, and generally higher academic integrity.

What do we offer?

DTU has bought access to the extended Mendeley Institutional Edition.

Teaching provides students with:

  • an introduction to Mendeley’s features and setup
  • an overview of methods for importing references and building a reference database
  • guidance on using Mendeley for citations and reference lists in Word
  • support for integration between Mendeley and Overleaf, which many students use.
