Generativ AI

– generative AI as a supplement for finding alternative search terms, creating short summaries, and visualizing search results

Generative AI is a new tool in the toolbox that can be used as a supplement in the search process – from idea development and conceptual clarification to suggestions for new keywords. The many different generative AI–assisted tools can help create new insights and provide an initial overview of a field. Students gain insight into how they can translate their academic research questions into targeted search strategies, also adapted to academically recognized databases.

In addition, students can use generative AI as a sparring partner and professional supplement. They will work with reproducible prompts constructed using role, goal, context, and constraints. Students learn how to refine these prompts so that the AI output becomes more precise and applicable in an academic context.

Beyond concrete search techniques, DTU Library can also introduce students to the academically appropriate use of generative AI in assignments and projects. At DTU, the use of generative AI is permitted – but it must still be credited and documented in accordance with standard academic guidelines. The student is always responsible for the final submission, and a GenAI can never be an author.

The session may therefore focus on both disciplinary use of GenAI and academically correct use, including:

  • using chatbots such as  Copilot or ChatGPT for idea development, keywords, and field overviews – and then verifying results in DTU Findit

  • translating a research question into search profiles (blocks, synonyms, subject terms) and more precise AI prompts

  • validating AI-generated suggestions using primary sources (DOI checks, citations) and documenting the method (AI disclosure)

  • a mini-workflow from searching → screening → note-taking → structuring the writing process

  • prompt templates, search logs, AI disclosures, and verification checklists

  • documenting the use of GenAI in accordance with DTU’s published guidelines.

We support the development of AI literacy by introducing students to responsible and transparent use of generative AI tools in literature searching, analysis, and knowledge production. We also emphasize methodological understanding, ethical considerations, and critical evaluation of AI output.
