How do I achieve Open Access?

Before you submit your article to the journal

Before you submit an article to a journal, it is important that you check out the Legal aspects – especially your rights in relation to parallel publishing, funder requirements etc. Many funders have open access requirements and you risk having to repay parts of your grant if these requirements are not met.

Green Open Access

DTU’s publishing policy recommends Green Open Access. Green Open Access (or parallel publishing) means that a scientific article is published in a traditional journal and simultaneously the post-print (also called the 'author’s accepted manuscript') is uploaded to DTU Orbit. The post-print is then made Open Access – typically after an embargo period of between 6–48 months.

Save the post-print version of your article

A post-print is the peer-reviewed and accepted version of an article – also known as “author’s accepted manuscript”. The intellectual content of the post-print is identical to the published version, however, the post-print lacks journal layout and logo. In most cases, the post-print may be uploaded with Open Access to repositories such as DTU Orbit - typically after an embargo period of 6-24 months.

It is important that you keep a copy of the post-print version of your article – even if you are not the corresponding author. We need the post-prints in order to meet DTU’s obligations in relation to the National Open Access requirements.

Send your post-print to DTU Orbit

DTU researchers must send the post-print versions of their publications to DTU Library. The Library will take care of the rest, i.e. ensure the manuscripts are made available Open Access as quickly as possible and in accordance with journal and publisher guidelines.

Embargo periods on post-print

DTU Library will make sure the manuscripts are made available Open Access as quickly as possible and in accordance with journal and publisher guidelines. Most journals require that the post-print remains hidden, i.e., under embargo, for a period – typically 6–24 months. DTU Library will add an embargo to the post-prints and when the embargos end, the post-prints will be released with  Open Access in DTU Orbit.

Articles published in Open Access journals

If the article is published in a regular Open Access journal, you do not have to send in the post-print as DTU Library will simply upload the publisher version with Open Access.

Subscription articles that have been released with Open Access

If you have paid a fee to release your subscription article with Open Access after publication, you will need to inform DTU Library about the change so that the DTU Orbit record may be updated and the article made available Open Access in DTU Orbit.
