Both national and international funding bodies, including the EU, require Open Access publication of research results from the studies they support.
At DTU Library, we sometimes hear from research colleagues who have run into financial difficulties because they did not account for publication costs in their research grant applications.
Plan Open Access publishing from the start
Generally, publishing Open Access costs. In many cases, Open Access publication fees can be fully covered by the grant, provided these costs are included in the budget as a separate item at the time of application. Many funding bodies require costs to be specified already in the application for them to be reimbursed. It is therefore important to consider Open Access publishing from the very beginning of your research project.
If the publication fee (APC) cannot be covered, the corresponding author is responsible for paying the APC.
Discounts on the Article Processing Charge (APC)
Some publishers offer discounts on APCs as part of DTU Library’s subscription agreements. Several of these agreements even include the possibility of publishing Open Access free of charge.
You can read more about the content of these agreements on our website, including which publishers are included, their specific discounts, and their requirements.

Green Open Access doesn't do it
For many years, we have talked about green Open Access, where a version of the article—typically a post-print (accepted manuscript)—is made freely available in a research database such as DTU Orbit. As this type of parallel publishing is almost always associated with an embargo period, i.e. delayed availability, green Open Access does not meet funders’ requirements for immediate access to published research results.
