American Society for Microbiology (ASM)

- free Open Access publishing in selected journals from ASM

In 2025, Danish Universities has entered into a three-year national  Subscribe to Open agreement with publisher American Society for Microbiology which includes publishing and Open Access.

DTU Library joined the agreement in mid-2026, covering accepted articles in the period from 1 June 2026 to 31 December 2027.

About Subscribe to Open (S2O)
Subscribe to Open (S2O) converts traditional journal subscriptions into a collective funding model, allowing an entire journal volume to be made openly accessible if a sufficient number of institutions participate. The agreement with ASM therefore enables Open Access publishing in six selected journals without APC charges, as well as discounts on page charges and supplementary charges. The agreement with ASM also ensures that Open Access publishing remains guaranteed, even if the required threshold of contributing institutions is not reached.

When submitting your research article, it is important that you choose DTU as your affiliated institution and that you use your corresponding DTU-mail address, so that you can publish under the ASM Open Access agreement.

  • Use your DTU e-mail as the corresponding author
  • State DTU as your institutional affiliation (Technical University of Denmark).
  • The corresponding author that has accepted the manuscript, must be employed or studying at the institution which he or she has credited – in this case DTU.
  • It is possible for the corresponding author to have multiple or several places of employment, so long that one of these places of employment is at an institution which is a part of the applicable agreement, and that the institution in question, is explicitly credited – in this case DTU.
Examples of multiple places of employment: a university and a hospital, a university and a corporation, two different universities.
  • Only the corresponding author´s association to DTU is required to publish Open Access under the agreement.

Who does not qualify as the corresponding author?
Corresponding authors that are, for example emeritus, guest researchers or in any other way associated with DTU are not permitted to publish Open Access under the agreement.

It is always the corresponding author who is responsible for the publication of the article and any related expenses.

On the ASM website you will find a S2O Author FAQ an an Open Access-guide.

When submitting the manuschrip use the detailed guide (pdf).

Please note that you must use Chronos Hub Path 2 when publishing in one of the six selected S2O journals.

Page Charges and Supplementary Charges
As a corresponding author at DTU, ASM will automatically grant a 25% discount on page charges. If you are both a DTU corresponding author and an ASM member, you can receive a 44% discount on page charges.
