Open Access - green or gold?

Open Access is about providing free access to scientific publications - and still more research is released Open Access. But how do you best publish your research Open Access? And what is DTU's policy on Open Access?

When you want to publish your research Open Access, you can choose two different ways: green or gold.

Green Open Access
Green Open Access is when you parallel publish your work in an open archive or repository like DTU Orbit You simply upload a full-text version of your accepted, peer-reviewed article to the repository and the article eventually becomes freely available to everybody. Often this is the post-print version.

DTU endorses Green Open Access and encourages all researchers to deposit their post-prints in DTU Orbit. Most publishing houses allow some form of Open Access self-archiving.
Always remember to hold on to your post-print.

Gold Open Access is when you choose to pay an Article Processing Charge, APC, to the publisher to make your article available Open Access. The article will then become freely accessible to all via the publishing house.

Golden Open Access
Golden Open Access options offered by traditional subscription-based journals involve the risk of “double dipping” as DTU risks paying twice: i.e. for subscribing to the journal and for publishing content in the journal via APC. Thus DTU Library recommends only publishing Golden Open Access in Open Access journals i.e. journals that are not subscription-based (see www.doaj.org).

If you publish your article Gold Open Access by paying an APC, please remember to use the correct account number when you enter the amount into the accounts. The account number is: 14701401

DTU Publication Policy
At DTU Open Access publishing is an important part of the DTU publication policy. DTU publications must be easily and freely available to the widest possible audience. DTU researchers must therefore always consider Open Access when deciding where and how to publish.

Definitions

A post-print is a digital version of a scientific article after peer-review. This version may also be called "final author manuscript". The post-print is accepted for publication but still lacks formal publisher layout. The intellectual content is identical to the published version that will eventually appear in the actual journal.

A pre-print is a draft version of a scientific article for at peer-review journal. It has not been peer-reviewed, accepted or indeed published and is not necessarily identical to the final published article.

APC stands for Article Processing Charge; it is a fee that the publisher charges to make your article available Open Access. Some publishers offer discounts on APCs to DTU researchers, as a part of DTU Library’s subscriptions or as part of a discount agreement.
