This year's measurement from the Open Access Indicator is now published by the Ministry of Higher Education and Science. The indicator is a measure for the share of the scientific publications from the Danish universities that are published as Open Access, i.e. with free and unrestricted online access.
Open Access publishing is perhaps more important than ever before, as funding from Horizon Europe and the European Research Council, ERC, now requires immediate Open Access to publications from research they support - without embargo.
News from the ministry
DTU continues to shine
DTU is still number two on the list of Danish universities with just over 73% Open Access measured on 4,057 publications, of which 2,979 are Open Access. This is a slight increase of 0.7 points. DTU is still surpassed only by the IT University, scoring high on very few publications.
You see an average progress on the national survey. Three universities have met this year's target of 63 % in the National Strategy for Open Access. Thus, the University of Southern Denmark has now joined the "club" with 70%, while the University of Copenhagen and Roskilde University are "bubbles" with respectively 57% and 60% Open Access publications. DTU thus continues to do very well in the comparison.
The latest measurement of the indicator
We can do even better if we help each other
Figures for DTU show that 373 publications could have been published Open Access, but do not count. These are publications where the publisher allows for "parallel publication" of the post-print version / authors accepted manuscript and where the embargo period is no more than 12 months, but where DTU Library has not received the post-print.
Had we be able to catch those 373 publications together, the Open Access share for DTU would have been as high as 80%!
So dear researchers, when you send the post-print version of your scientific articles to DTU Library, we take care of the registration in DTU Orbit and ensure that copyright and any embargo periods for the publication are complied with.
Reaching the national Open Access goals of 100% from 2025 onwards is dependent on DTU's researchers continuing to send all their post-prints to DTU Library.

Thus, the important message is still that DTU's researchers should remember to submit their post-print versions of the article when ready for publication in a scientific journal, by sending it to DTU Library at orbit@dtu.dk

Follow DTU's Open Access figures - even for departments and sections
DTU Library monitors DTU's Open Access figures with data from DTU Orbit. We have integrated Open Access statistics for DTU publications, DTU Research Output Statistics, in DTU Findit. The statistics are designed to monitor and document inputs to the annual UMV statistics. Open Access statistics are updated every two weeks.
Find the Open Access statistics by logging in to DTU Findit, select "Statistics" in the dropdown menu at your profile at the top right. Check "Show Open Access".
By default, the figures for the entire university are shown, but you can find the Open Access statistics for your department or section by selecting the drop-down menu next to “Technical University of Denmark”.
The statistics consist of three categories:
- Open Access: publications that can be freely downloaded from DTU Orbit
- Embargoed Open Access: publications under embargo
- Closed: publications that are not affiliated with an OA-accessible or embargo-covered publisher version or post-print.
If you want to know which publications fall into a particular category, click on the red number. You then get an overview of all the publications. Please note that the DTU Findit overview is "live" and updated regularly - unlike the statistics report's figures, which are locked.
