The Global Econometric Modeling group at The Novo Nordisk Foundation Center for Biosustainability (DTU Biosustain) is looking for a talented and motivated postdoctoral researcher to develop and apply tools for identification of novel sustainable chemical production pathways.

The project is responsible for performing model-based evaluation of the technological feasibility and economic viability of commodity bio-based chemicals. The knowledge and predictions of this group would be utilized to provide DTU Biosustain with target molecules with commercialization potential. In particular, the goal of the project is to develop a comprehensive multi-scale and multi-sector model of the commodity chemical industry, encompassing both petrochemical and biochemical technologies. The outcomes from the framework and associated models will guide the selection of chemical products, biomass feedstocks, host organisms and process technologies to focus on, at DTU Biosustain.

Responsibilities and tasks

  • Continue development of pathway prediction tools (see e.g. Campodonico et al. Metabolic Engineering 2014)
  • Application of pathway prediction tools in conjunction with techno-economic modeling related to production of bulk and fine chemicals (see Zhuang and Herrgard Metabolic Engineering 2015)
  • Prospective evaluation of potential fine and bulk chemical products and host organisms for translational research projects at DTU Biosustain aimed at commercialization
  • Participation in techno-economic model development efforts including collection and validation of parameters from literature, databases and online resources
  • Collaboration with other groups at DTU Biosustain in assessing technological, economic, and ecological feasibility of proposed products and host organisms
Qualifications
  • Candidates should hold a PhD degree in chemical engineering, chemistry, biotechnology, bioengineering, bioinformatics or similar field
  • The applicant should preferably have experience in cheminformatics and mining of chemical compound databases
  • The applicant should have previous experience in modeling of large-scale biochemical networks
  • Previous experience in constraint-based modeling and analysis is desirable
  • Experience in chemical process modeling, techno-economic assessment or life cycle assessment is desirable
  • Previous experience in developing scientific software in Python, R, Matlab or similar language is desirable
  • Good communication skills in English are required

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union.
