We invite applications for an appointment as assistant professor in Aquaculture with specific focus on Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS). The assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position.

DTU Aqua - National Institute of Aquatic Resources – is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). Our mission is to conduct research, provide advice, educate at university level and contribute to innovation in sustainable exploitation and management of aquatic resources. The goal is to be a leading international institute for marine sciences, fisheries and aquaculture, which is able to address the environmental consequences and interactions of human activities in the aquatic environment and to resolve the long standing conflict between aquatic resource exploitation and conservation.

Responsibilities and tasks
The research focus of the applicant is expected to be in the field of recirculating aquaculture systems in general and waste water treatment/end of pipe treatment and N-removal in particular.

Responsibilities and tasks of the position will include the following topics: 

  • Research-based teaching in aquaculture with specific reference to Recirculation Aquaculture Systems (RAS) on DTU Aqua M.Sc. courses in Aquatic Science and Technology
  • Research in recirculation and end-of-pipe waste water treatment in RAS, in particular methods to improve N-removal
  • Supervise B. Sc. and M.Sc. students and co-supervise Ph.D. students as well as undertake supervision of thesis work
  • Participate in formulation of innovative research proposals to attract funding for the research work at Section for Aquaculture

We expect the candidate to have a focused expertise within one or more of these topics and experience from practical implication of research results in aquaculture practises. Hence, the candidate is expected to have an applied approach and to pursue collaboration with the aquaculture industry.

Section for Aquaculture conducts research within biological and technological aspects of aquaculture. Our two main research themes are 1) Rearing systems and farming technology, in particular related to recirculation systems and 2) Fish nutrition and fish physiology including welfare issues. Both topics aim at improving production efficiency and reducing environmental impact since the overall aim of the research is to improve performance and sustainability (economically and environmentally) of aquaculture.

Section for Aquaculture is part of a strong national and international network within the field of aquaculture. We attract researchers, students, incl. Ph.D students and postdocs from many countries, creating an international environment in close collaboration with other research groups within DTU Aqua, other DTU Departments (e.g. DTU Environment, DTU Food, DTU Vet) as well as many other national and international research institutions. 

The candidates must have 

  • A PhD degree (or equivalent qualifications).
  • Research based knowledge and experience with recirculation aquaculture systems in general; and wastewater treatment in particular.
  • Experience and interest in teaching.
  • Working experience with stakeholders and field-related work at commercial fish farms is considered an asset.

In the assessment of the candidates consideration will be given to 

  • Experience in teaching within aquaculture, and in particular the areas of waste water treatment, including biological filtration and denitrification/end of pipe treatment
  • Scientific production and research potential at an international level, in particular in relation to N-removal from fish farming waste water
  • The ability to promote and utilize research results
  • An all-round experience basis in aquaculture, preferably including international experience
  • The ability to contribute to development of internal and external cooperation to further strengthen the research competences within the Aquaculture section

Salary and terms of employment   
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed with the relevant union. The position is available from November 1, 2017 or according to mutual agreement.

An assistant professorship is a permanent entry-level faculty position. After a maximum of 4 years, the employee transfers to a position as associate professor provided that the employee is recommended for assessment and assessed as qualified. DTU Aqua - National Institute of Aquatic Resources - has about 290 employees, of whom a third are scientific staff. The other employees are assistant biologists, laboratory technicians, administrative staff, ship’s crew, student assistants etc. The institute is organised into eight scientific sections which carry out the research, educational and advisory activities. In addition, the institute has a number of scientific and administrative support functions, including the research vessel Dana.
